An iPhone as a sketch pad?! When I saw the title and the image on the American Artist blog I thought ‘No way! There’s an app for that!’. I was amazed…I can barely type on mine! Brooklyn artist David Jon Kassan used the Sketches app to create the portrait for the article. Kassan’s work is outstanding so I wasn’t surprised at the level of talent but was surprised that a program on an iPhone could provide that level of control.
Reading on in the American Artist post I came to the link of The New Yorker magazine cover that was done on the iPhone by Jorge Colombo. He used an app called Brushes. He’s now selling his iPhone sketches. I shouldn’t be surprised….I use Corel Painter all of the time and think it’s great. Needless to say I’ve ordered myself a Pogo stylus and downloaded the Brushes and Sketches apps. One more reason for me to love my iPhone.

It’s probably not the best idea to have my first post on my blog send you off to another designers website, but…it’s a really cool site and his work is really interesting. The designer/artist/gamer (do they still call them gamers?) is David Werner. The work is a few years old (he’s moved onto bigger and better things) but his approach to his portfolio is still unique. His use of video, to explain the concepts of his work, is a slap-in-the-head-why-didn’t-I-think-of-that idea. The videos enable the visitor to really understand what he was trying to accomplish in each of his chosen pieces…not to mention an interview handed to an Art Director or client interested in hiring him. I’d love to add video to my site but I’m not sure I have the story-telling capabilities of Mr. Werner. Take a look, if anything it’s entertaining.
